Doris "Dorie" Miller was a U.S. Navy sailor whose extraordinary bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor cemented his place in American history.
Born in Waco, Texas, in 1919, Miller served as a mess attendant — one of the few roles available to Black sailors under segregation.
On December 7, 1941, he rushed to aid wounded sailors, helping carry the injured captain of the USS West Virginia to safety.
He then took control of an anti-aircraft machine gun — without any formal training — and fought back against the Japanese attack.
His heroism earned him the Navy Cross, making him the first Black American ever to receive the honor.
Miller's legacy stands as a powerful symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the long struggle for equality within the U.S. armed forces. Read More... |
